It is an element that affects the humidity, temperature, hygiene and naturalness of your reptile&#8217;s behavior. Choosing the wrong substrate can lead to serious health problems. Check out how to choose the right <strong>substrate for your terrarium<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The role of the substrate in the terrarium<\/h2>\n\n<p>A good substrate performs several functions at the same time:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Maintains proper humidity levels<\/li><li>Absorbs impurities  odors<\/li><li>Enables natural behaviour (digging, burial)<\/li><li>Facilitates hygiene<\/li><li>Imitates the natural habitat of a reptile<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fiber and coconut chips \u2013 a versatile choice<\/h2>\n\n<p>Natural substrate made from coconut shells is one of the most popular substrates in terrariums. It absorbs moisture well and gives it away, absorbs odors, has a neutral pH and low salt content. It is suitable for snakes, geckos, agamas, turtles and most lizards.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Two fractions are available: fine (up to 12 mm) and coarser (12-22 mm). <a href=\"https:\/\/reptishop.pl\/en\/produkt\/podloze-kokosowe-coco-plug-12-22-mm-45kg-en\/\" title=\"Coco Plug Substrate 12-22mm\">The Coco Plug 12-22 mm (4.5 kg)<\/a> is an efficient option \u2013 one block is enough for several replacements.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lignocel \u2013 excellent for snakes<\/h2>\n\n<p>Lignocel is a finely ground wood cellulose fiber that absorbs moisture and is convenient for daily use. It does not contain resins and irritants. Ideal for corn snakes, pythons and other reptiles that do not require a lot of humidity.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The offer includes <a href=\"https:\/\/reptishop.pl\/en\/produkt\/pets-dream-snake-chipsi-snake-lignocel-en\/\" title=\"Lignocel Chips Snake\">Chipsi Snake Lignocel<\/a> \u2013 specially dedicated to snake breeding \u2013 and an economical <a href=\"https:\/\/reptishop.pl\/en\/produkt\/podloze-lignocel-3-4mm-12-5-kg-en\/\" title=\"Lignocel 12.5kg\">12.5 kg lignocel<\/a> for larger farms.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vermiculite \u2013 irreplaceable during incubation<\/h2>\n\n<p>Vermiculite is not a typical medium for everyday use \u2013 it is an incubation substrate. It is used to incubate reptile eggs, as it perfectly maintains constant humidity. <a href=\"https:\/\/reptishop.pl\/en\/produkt\/wermikulit-5-10-litrow-en\/\" title=\"Vermiculite 5-10 liters\">Vermiculite 5\u201310 liters<\/a> is a set sufficient for several incubation seasons. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Terrarium mats \u2013 hygiene and comfort<\/h2>\n\n<p>The mats are convenient to clean \u2013 after removing them, they can be washed and disinfected. They are especially useful during the quarantine of a new animal and with young individuals, where it is important to quickly control impurities. The downside is the lack of burial opportunities.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to avoid?<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Coniferous sawdust<\/strong> (pine, spruce) \u2013 contains essential oils toxic to reptiles<\/li><li><strong>Fine construction sand<\/strong> \u2013 dust, irritates the respiratory tract, risk of impactment<\/li><li><strong>Substrates with fertilizers and pesticides<\/strong> \u2013 absolutely prohibited<\/li><li><strong>Sharp-edged materials<\/strong> \u2013 can hurt delicate scales<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How often should the substrate be replaced?<\/h2>\n\n<p>With coconut substrate, the so-called <strong>spot cleaning<\/strong> is used \u2013 ongoing removal of faeces, and full replacement every 6-10 weeks. Lignocel needs to be replaced more often \u2013 every 3-5 weeks. Replace paper and disposable mats immediately after getting dirty.
