10 essential accessories for a terrarium for a snake
A properly equipped terrarium is the key to the health and comfort of your snake. In addition to the tank itself and the heating, you need a few key accessories. Here are 10 things that snake breeding should not do without.
1. Water bowls
The hose must have constant access to fresh water. The bowl should be large enough for the hose to submerge (it helps with molting and hydration). A durable 450ml steel bowl or an economical disposable bowl are great options. Change the water 2-3 times a week.
2. Hideout – a must-have
Snakes need a hiding place to rest and feel safe. The lack of a hiding place causes constant stress and appetite problems. The hiding place should be so small that the snake can feel the touch of the walls on both sides of the body. Check out the terrarium hideout size M.
3. Feeding tweezers – safety first
Never give food by hand! The snake reacts to heat and movement – it can mistakenly attack the fingers. The long tweezers ensure a safe distance during feeding. The 45cm Wraith straight tweezers are a popular choice, and for larger snakes, the 60cm tweezers are ideal. There is also a curved version available for easier maneuvering of the food.
4. Thermometer and hygrometer
Temperature and humidity control is absolutely essential. Place the thermometer in several places in the terrarium – especially in the warm zone and near the ground. A hygrometer will help keep an eye on humidity, which is crucial during molting.
5. Power strip
In snake farming, you need sockets for many devices – thermostat, lighting, heating foil. A good 12-socket power strip is the basis of any decent breeding station. Smaller version: 7-socket strip with switch.
6. Breeding tags
With more hoses, it is easy to lose information about feeding, molting, last cleaning. The breeding marker system allows you to visually mark each container – when fed, when to change the water, when to molt the last molt.
7. Foil or heating mat with thermostat
This is the heart of the heating system. Without a thermostat, the foil can overheat the hose. Always buy these two items together.
8. Substrate suitable for the species
Coconut fiber, lignocel or paper – choose according to the needs of a specific species. Replace regularly, keep clean.
9. Feeding container (optional)
Some breeders use a separate container for feeding. This reduces the association of opening the main box with food, which reduces the aggressiveness of snakes. A simple plastic container will do.
10. Glass water bowl for terrarium
The 400 ml glass water bowl is a durable and aesthetic option for snakes in glass terrariums. Heavy – does not tip over, easy to disinfect.
