The corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus) is the best choice for people starting their adventure with reptile breeding. Its mild character, small size, resistance and availability in countless color varieties make it a species that delights both children and adult breeders. Here’s everything you need to know before buying.

Corn hose – basic information

The species is native to North America, where it inhabits forests, fields and rocky areas. Adults reach 90–150 cm and live in captivity for 15–20 years. They lead a terrestrial-arboreal lifestyle, they are active mainly at dusk and at night.

  • Temperament: gentle, curious, rarely aggressive
  • Size: 90-150 cm
  • Life expectancy: 15–20 years
  • Breeding difficulty: easy

Terrarium for the corn snake

The minimum dimensions of a terrarium for an adult corn snake are 80×40×40 cm. Tightness is important – the corn hose is a master of escape and can find any gap. The terrarium must have solid closures and a ventilation net to prevent it from getting out.

Equipment: minimum two hiding places (on the warm and cool side), a bowl of water, branches or shelves for climbing. The corn snake likes to explore – the rich environment reduces stress and improves well-being.

Heating and temperature

Thermal requirements of the grain hose:

  • Heat zone: 28–30°C
  • Cool zone: 22-24°C
  • Night temperature: approx. 20°C

A 15W heating cable or heating foil is used for heating, always connected to the thermostat. The B1 Dimming thermostat will ensure a stable temperature without fluctuations.

Substrate for the corn snake

Best Substrate Options:

  • Lignocel – absorbent, safe, natural. Snake Lignocel chips are a dedicated choice for snakes
  • Coconut fiber – good for hoses that require higher humidity
  • Paper towels – for young individuals and during quarantine

The humidity should be 40-60%, and it is worth increasing it a little during molting.

Feeding the corn snake

The corn snake feeds on rodents. Always give frozen and thawed prey – live rodents can injure the snake. Feeding schedule:

  • Juvenile (up to 3 months): every 5-7 days, newborn mouse
  • Juveniley (3-12 months): every 7 days, baby mouse
  • Adults: every 10-14 days, mouse or small rat according to the size of the snake

Color varieties – morphs of the corn snake

This is one of the reasons for the huge popularity of this genre. There are over 800 documented color varieties available. The most popular morphs are:

  • Normal – classic orange coloration
  • Albino – white background, orange patterns
  • Snow – white-pink, lack of melanin and xanthine pigment
  • Bloodred – intense red
  • Okeetee – clear black pattern borders
