Feeding the king python is one of the topics that raises the most questions for novice breeders. How many times a week? What size rodent? Frozen or live? In this article, we answer all your questions – based on current breeding knowledge.

What do king pythons eat?

The royal python is a constrictor that hunts rodents and small birds in the wild. In home breeding, the basis of the diet is made up of:

  • Mice (for juveniles)
  • Rats (for adults)
  • Multimammate (for selected individuals)

It is strongly recommended to give frozen and thawed food (F/T – frozen/thawed). Live rodents can injure the snake, frozen food is safer and more hygienic.

How often should you feed a king python?

Snake age/size Feeding frequency Prey size
Neonate (freshly hatched) Every 5-7 days Newborn mouse (pinky)
Juvenile (up to approx. 300g) Every 7 days Adult mouse or small rat
Sub-adult (300g-1kg) Every 10-14 days Medium rat
Adult (over 1kg) Every 14-21 days Large rat

How to choose the size of the victim?

The basic rule: the prey should be no wider than 1.5 times the widest part of the snake’s body. After proper feeding, you can see a slight bulge in the middle of the body — this is the norm.

Too small a prey will not feed the snake and can cause refuses. Too much creates a risk of regurgitation (regurgitation) — which is very stressful for the snake and can lead to health problems.

How to defrost food?

  • Take the rodent out of the freezer 1-2 hours before feeding
  • Place in a ziplock bag and soak in warm (not hot!) water for 15-20 minutes
  • Check the temperature before serving – the prey should be warm to the touch (approx. 37-40°C)
  • Never use a microwave – it causes uneven heating

How to give food?

Use long forceps – never feed by hand, especially for snakes that have a strong shock reflex. Hold the rodent by the tail and gently move it, imitating a lively movement. Most pythons react to thermal movement.

Always feed outside the breeding box or in a separate feeding container – this reduces the association of opening the box with food (reduces the risk of accidental bites).

Refuses — when a python doesn’t want to eat

The king python is famous for its periodic refusals to feed. That’s normal! The reasons can be different:

  • Molting period – the snake often refuses before molting
  • Mating season (especially males in autumn and winter)
  • Stress (change of environment, too small hiding place, wrong temperature)
  • Too big box / lack of security

If the snake does not eat for 4-6 weeks, do not panic. Check the breeding conditions. A good hiding place is key – snakes feel safe when their body comes into contact with the walls of the shelter. In our offer you will find terrarium hiding places in various sizes.

Feed tracking in multi-farming

If you have more than one animal, it is worth keeping records of feedings. MOUSE breeding tags and RAT breeding tags are helpful – they allow you to tag individual individuals without having to remember them by their appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you feed a python a live rodent?

Possible, but not recommended. A live rodent can seriously injure a snake. In Poland, the feeding of live vertebrates is also legally restricted.

What to do when a snake vomits food?

Wait at least 2 weeks before the next feeding and give a smaller prey. Regurgitation is a serious stress for the digestive system.

Can a python be overfed?

Yes. King pythons are prone to obesity. Stick to the schedule and choose the right size of the victim.

Summary

Feeding a king python is a simple routine if you know the rules: the right frequency, the right size of prey, frozen food properly thawed. If you’re new to breeding or looking for equipment, check out the Starter Box L – a ready-made kit for breeding a king python.
