The thermostat is the heart of any terrarium. Without it, even the best heating mat or light bulb can overheat or underheat the animal. But there are several types of thermostats on the market — and not all of them are suitable for every application. This article will help you choose the right one.

Types of thermostats for terrarium

ON/OFF thermostat – the easiest choice

The ON/OFF thermostat is the basic model: when the set temperature is reached, it cuts off the power supply, when it drops, it turns it back on. Simple and reliable technology, but it has one drawback – the temperature fluctuates around the set value (a few degrees up and down).

When to select ON/OFF:

  • For heating mats in rack systems
  • For simple terrariums with less demanding species
  • When your budget is limited

Our offer includes the Ministat 100W ON/OFF thermostat and the Ministat 600W ON/OFF THERMOSTAT — differing in the maximum power of the heating device.

Dimming thermostat – infinitely adjustable

Thermostat dimming smoothly regulates the power supply to the heating device instead of turning it off. This means a more stable temperature and a longer lifespan for the bulbs. Ideal for heating bulbs, ceramic heat emitters and reflectors.

Pulse Thermostat – For Mats Cables

The pulse thermostat sends short pulses of current to the heating device, regulating its temperature. It works great with heating mats, cables and heating foil. Not suitable for light bulbs (causes flickering).

The B2 Pulse Thermostat is a popular choice among growers using rack systems with mats.

EVO thermostat – the best control

The EVO series are advanced thermostats with display, daily programming and alarm options. Connected models also offer Wi-Fi monitoring — you can check the temperature in your terrarium from your phone, wherever you are.

Which thermostat for which animal?

Pet Recommended Type Why
King Python / Corn Hose ON/OFF or Pulse Heating Mat Under Box
Bearded Agama / Leopard Gecko Dimming Headlight Bulb As Spot
Land turtle Dimming or ON/OFF Depending on the type of heating
Spider Tarantula ON/OFF or Pulse Mat or Heating Cable
Multi-rack farmingPulse or EVO Connected Control of multiple units at the same time

What to look for when choosing?

  • Maximum power – the thermostat must handle the sum of the power of all connected devices
  • Heating Device Type – → Pulse or ON/OFF Mat/Cable; → Dimming Bulb
  • Number of zones – how many terrariums or levels you want to control with one device
  • Temperature alarm – indispensable in large farms where a fault threatens massive losses

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a thermostat mandatory?

With PTC mats – recommended, but technically not necessary due to self-adjustment. With light bulbs and cables — absolutely necessary, without it the risk of overheating is very high.

Where to place the thermostat sensor?

The sensor should be located in the warm zone of the terrarium, but not directly on the heating element. For mats placed under the box — at the bottom of the box, on the warm side.

Can one thermostat support several mats?

Yes, provided that the sum of the power of the mats does not exceed the maximum power of the thermostat. Check the specifications before purchasing.

Summary

The choice of thermostat depends mainly on the type of heating device and the number of pets. For simple hose breeding in a box – ON/OFF or Pulse is enough. For a terrarium with a heating bulb, you need a dimmer. For larger farming, EVO Connected with alarm gives you peace of mind. You can find the entire range of thermostats in the terrarium thermostats category.
