Reptiles are warm-blooded animals – they cannot regulate their body temperature on their own. This means that the quality of heating in the terrarium has a direct impact on their health and life expectancy. The key link in this system is the terrarium thermostat – a device that protects your pet from overheating or cooling down.

What are the risks of not having a thermostat?

A heating mat or foil without a thermostat works “at full power” around the clock. The substrate temperature can then exceed 40°C, leading to:

  • Burns to the body shells
  • Dehydration
  • Digestive disorders
  • Damage to internal organs
  • In extreme cases – death of the animal

A thermostat is not a luxury – it is the absolute minimum of safety.

Types of thermostats – which one to choose?

ON/OFF thermostat – the cheapest, simplest

Turns the heating on and off when the temperature exceeds a preset threshold. Easy to use, but causes temperature fluctuations of 1–2°C. Recommended for less demanding species and for basic heating. Example: Ministat 100W ON/OFF.

Dimming thermostat – precision and energy savings

It regulates the heating power smoothly (just like a dimmer). It maintains the temperature with an accuracy of ±0.5°C. Recommended for demanding grades and rack systems. The Microclimate B1 Dimming thermostat is one of the most popular choices for growers.

Pulse Thermostat (PWM) – for lamps and heating stones

It controls the power by pulsing the signal rapidly. Ideal for incandescent lamps and heating stones, where smooth adjustment is key. The Microclimate B2 Pulse is a solid choice for this category of applications.

Wi-Fi thermostat – control from the app

The most modern solution. It allows you to monitor and change the temperature from your smartphone, sets the day/night mode, sends alarms in the event of a failure. EVO Connected III is a flagship model with alarm and app operation. For even greater requirements, EVO Connected Pro is available.

EVO Lite thermostat – budget Wi-Fi

If you want to be able to monitor from your phone but are looking for a more budget solution, the EVO Lite is a great option with a mobile app at a lower price.

How to choose a thermostat for your needs?

  • 1 tank, budget → Ministat ON/OFF or EVO Lite
  • Rack system with → B1 Dimming or B2 Pulse heating foil
  • Professional breeding or incubation → EVO Connected III or EVO Connected Pro
  • No time for continuous monitoring → any model with alarm (EVO Connected II/III/Pro)

RAMP function – why is it important?

EVO Connected models offer a RAMP function that allows you to gradually transition between day and night temperatures. Instead of a sharp jump from 31°C to 28°C, the temperature changes smoothly for 30-60 minutes – just like in nature. This is especially important for species that require a daily thermal gradient.
