If reptile farming is more than just one living room terrarium for you, you’ve probably faced a space problem at some point. Four king pythons occupy four terrariums, eight individuals are already eight cabinets. The rack system solves this problem elegantly – and at the same time raises the hygiene and organizational standards of the entire farm.

What is a rack system and how does it work?

A rack system is a multi-level shelving system in which each animal occupies its own lockable breeding box. The boxes slide into designated places on the shelf, one above the other — like drawers in a closet.

Unlike traditional glass terrariums, the breeding rack:

  • occupies a fraction of the floor area with the same number of animals
  • allows individual heating of each level
  • provides animals with a sense of security (darkened boxes reduce stress)
  • facilitates daily operations – water changes, feeding, cleaning

WRS PRO or WRS Classic – which model should you choose?

WRS systems are available in two lines, differing in material and purpose.

WRS Classic – the perfect start

Classic shelving units are made of PVC and composites. This is a solution for breeders who are starting their adventure with rack systems or keep breeding on a hobby scale. Less weight and lower price while maintaining full functionality.

In the offer you will find models adapted to different sizes of WRS boxes:

WRS PRO – for demanding growers

The PRO line is made of aluminum — lighter, stronger and more resistant to moisture than PVC. This is the choice of breeders who run larger farms or value a long-term investment. The PRO models are available in multi-row configurations, which allows for optimal space management.

Heating in a rack system – how does it work?

In a rack system, the heat source is heating mats placed under each level of the rack – directly under the box. The mat heats the bottom of the container from the bottom, creating a gradient of temperatures inside the box (warmer at the bottom, cooler at the top edge).

Key principles of heating in a rack system:

  • The mat should cover 1/3 to 1/2 of the bottom of the box (not the entire bottom)
  • Always use a thermostat – preferably a PULSE type
  • Check out the custom-made mats tailored to your shelving model

For the WRS10 racks, we recommend 145 mm heating mats on request, and for the WRS40/WRS70 — 280 mm mats on request.

Hygiene and biosecurity in a rack system

One of the biggest advantages of breeding racks is the ease of maintaining hygiene. Each box can be removed from the rack in seconds, moved to the cleaning area, thoroughly washed and disinfected, and then pushed back in.

In large farms, this also reduces the risk of parasites and diseases being transmitted between animals – each lives in its own isolated box without direct contact with roommates.

WRS breeding boxes – what to choose for the shelf?

A rack is only half of the system — the other half is breeding boxes. WRS boxes are made of food-grade plastic with a thickness of 3 mm, which ensures good heat accumulation. They are available in the following versions:

  • Clear or Gray
  • Flat (flat bottom) or Cup (with water bowl holder)

Dark boxes work better for species stressed by eye contact. The bowl holder is a practical accessory for regular water changes. You can find the entire range of WRS breeding containers in our store.

Is a rack system good for every genre?

Rack systems are perfect for species that naturally prefer small, cramped hiding places — most snakes: king pythons, corn snakes, constrictor boas, royal snakes. They are worse for reptiles that require a lot of space to move around (monitor lizards, agamas) or tall terrariums (green tree pythons).

Summary

The WRS rack system is a logical step for any breeder who owns more than a few animals. Space-saving, ease of use, controlled heating and simple hygiene are advantages that have convinced thousands of growers around the world. Start with one bookcase and judge for yourself.
